"Sandman" is the name given to the wight that controls Boss Leader, though it isn't a name it personally chose for itself[1], and indeed, is not its preferred form of address[2]. It is a spirit of dreams whose power allows the leaders of the Paranatural Activity Consortium to create the organization's dream base of operations.
Appearance[]
Sandman's body is either hidden behind (or consists of) several blankets of multiple colors and patterns. Its head is shaped like a black crescent moon with a sharply pointed nose and crater-like divots subtly inset into it. Its eyes are golden with minuscule pupils.
Paranatural[]
Chapter 7[]
After a younger Mina Zarei learns of the existence of wights, she demands that Boss Leader explain them in greater detail. Opting to show instead of tell, she summons Sandman in the center of the Consortium's dream base to exposit about the nature of wights. She claims that Sandman is the spirit that has possessed generations after generation of mediums, each of whom has taken the title of "Boss Leader" of the Consortium; furthermore, she explains that before she became a spectral, when she was chose by the former Boss Leader to be the one to inherit the position, she fell into a lifelong slumber upon possession, an unfortunate side effect of hearing a Wight Wail from up close.[3] She claims that this is the reason why the Dream Hub, which exists inside her dreams, is constantly accessible to spectrals around the world at any time.
Much later in the chapter, Boss Leader's inner monologue remarks that the version of the facts that she recounted to Spender and Mina was but a fabrication: the truth is that "[Sandman] was an ancient, powerful spirit, that she'd been every Boss Leader since the first, masquerading as a chain of mediums inheriting her power", a confession which calls all of Boss Leader’s previous explanations into question.
Abilities[]
General[]
As a wight, Sandman is nigh-impossible to truly destroy, has white spectral energy, and can only speak in Wight Wail.
Given that all of Boss Leader's incarnations were in fact extensions of Sandman's form, it is possible that Sandman is capable of speaking in human languages, or of creating simulacra of humans to do so on its behalf.
Dream Manipulation[]
Sandman has not been seen using its powers directly, and the full scope of its powers is currently unknown, but its current incarnation has described it as a "spirit of dreams" whose power is explicitly responsible for the Consortium's dream hub. Using its power, its current incarnation Boss Leader is capable of the following (implying Sandman has similar abilities):
- Changing the shape of her own body, including the addition of new limbs and rearranging her anatomy. Notably, this ability has sometimes resulted in Boss Leader having the same kind of golden eye that Sandman has[4][5].
- Manipulating any dream, including the perceived duration of it[6] and the clarity of the recollection each dreamer retains upon awakening.[7]
- Employing gushes of dreamstuff as an offensive ability.[8][9]
- An ability to perceive and interact with the true form of ghosts and spirits inside tools or mediums and eliminate them directly.
- Allowing multiple different people to share the same dream regardless of physical distance from each other.
