Monsters are a species of "corrupted humans"[1] being hunted down by the Cousinhood of Man.[2][3] According to the Paranatural Activity Consortium's leader, Boss Leader, the town of Mayview has "barriers in [its] stack" to prevent monsters from entering;[3] despite this, some have evidently done so, such as Dave Jones and his son, Cody Jones.
Subspecies[]

Vampires[]
- Main article: Vampires
Vampires are a type of monster that possesses attributes drawn from vampires in folklore and popular fiction, including sharp fangs, pale skin, and the state of being undead.[4] They are physically compelled to follow a set of vampire rules, including the requirement of continuous permission to stay in a building[5] and the compliance with orders from the vampire that "sired" them.[6] One vampire, Dave, states that he used to be a spectral and that he still considers himself one "for all intents and purposes".[7] They appear to be inherently capable of interacting with the spectral world to some extent; while Cody, a half-vampire, is unable to see spirits such as Hijack, he seems to display the ability to locate them by sound.[6]
Werewolves[]

Werewolves are another species that is heavily inspired from previous folklore and fiction; they are indistinguishable from regular humans on most days, but they turn into ravenous wolf-like creatures when exposed to the light of a full moon. In the world of Paranatural, a werewolf completely shielded from the rays of a full moon won't physically turn into a wolf, but their mind will be affected all the same[8]; werewolves will begin to show symptoms of their curse even in the days preceding and following a full moon, momentarily losing control of themselves.[9] Transformed werewolves are compelled to hunt and devour any sufficiently large animal, including humans; a human bit by a werewolf will turn into one themselves. It's implied werewolves retain their previous identity and memories when in human form, like Jean Garcia, and that they cannot recall what they experienced when trasformed; werewolf Shrike, on the other hand, doesn't seem to remember anything of her past, for reasons unknown. Werewolves can only be killed by silver projectiles, and are repelled by silver objects in general.[10] In any form, they can perceive spectral beings through touch and their enhanced smell only, but they can't see nor hear them.
Others[]
Zombies and skeletons are cadavers reanimated by Razor Rex's powers; little is known about them, other than they display varying degrees of sentience.[11][12][13] Zombies feed on human brains, and their bite turns victims into zombies.
Nosferatus are only mentioned once; they seem to be a distinct type of monsters from vampires.[11]

Trivia[]
- Monsters as a concept are first mentioned on Chapter 3, Page 41
, where Richard Spender assures that there are none in Mayview to his coworker, Texas Walker.
- According to Shrike, vampires and werewolves are each other's only predators.[14]
- In the official recap, monsters are described as "humans distorted by the supernatural, vampires and werewolves and worse".[15]

“Which is why it’s such a pity you’ve resolved to stay inside for your own safety,” Spender replied, using his powers to make his glasses flash for emphasis, “and the safety of stray cats across the island. You’re not fit to hunt when a moonbeam makes you lose your mind, Jean, even if the missing sliver spares your body.” (Chapter 9, Page 19

A particularly juicy-looking raccoon had arrested his attention that night, while he was out stalking the woods for signs of Shrike, and the rest had been a blur. He’d lost a perfectly good compound bow in the process... and that had been a few nights before the lunar peak, when the most its glow would do was make his arm hair stand on end. (Chapter 9, Page 19
