Isaac's illustration of a medium gaining their spirit's powers. (Chapter 3, Page 9)
Mediums are humans who have been possessed by spirits near permanent death, similar to how spirits can possess objects to create tools. In order to regain their strength, the spirits take their host's spectral energy to revive themselves after a period of time. The spirit living within the human feeds off their surplus spectral energy until they are ready to reemerge fully replenished.[1]
If a spirit's tool is broken or their medium dies, they pop out either in their "white ghosty form" or, if they've been fully healed, their regular form.[2] Both mediums and tool-wielders are also able to force their spirits to stay inside themselves and destroy them, though they are incapable of forcing them out on their own.[3]
A spirit may also possess a non-spectral human, in which case the human will gradually become a spectral over a period of time and take on their spectral energy color.[4][5] Mediums gain the ability to use the possessing spirit's powers directly without the use of a tool, and are implied to have more potent abilities than spectrals using tools.
Physical Effects[]
Similar to a tool, mediums will grow physical manifestations of the spirit possessing them; for example, Isaac O'Connor's spiky hair reflects characteristics of his spirit[6]. Long-time mediums will have more drastic changes to their body, and these physical changes are visible to non-spectrals and can dramatically alter their appearance. The extent of these physical manifestations depend on how much the spirit has healed; while Isaac's spirit has a long recovery time ahead of it, mediums who keep their spirit inside them past their full recovery cause more drastic changes, such as Consortium agent Greco Stucks.[7]
