You're in Mayview, the town on two hills, with nothing but a pristine lake and friendly people in between!

Mayview is the main setting of Paranatural. It is the old hometown of Mr. Puckett, who moves back to the town from Baxborough with his children, Max and Zoey Puckett, at the beginning of the comic. Though it appears normal at the surface, Mayview is a town overflowing with dark secrets, a supernatural hotspot at the center of a power struggle between multiple conspiracies, organizations, and supernatural forces.

Background[]

They are all related by and to this location, and I, for one, strongly believe there must be a hidden truth that ties them all together. That... is what I truly came to Mayview to investigate.
Mayview-mysteries Agent Day Ch5Pg144

Thirteen years prior to the events of the comic, an unexplained supernatural[1] incident occurred in Mayview. It is known to have involved a young, terrified Richard Spender being fished out of a lake by Lucifer[2] and a young Mina Zarei becoming colder and closing off her heart[3]. Prior to the incident, Spender and Zarei used to be close friends as children; sometime afterwards, Zarei moved away from the town for reasons unknown.[4] In Chapter 5, during a conversation with Lucifer about the incident with Forge in Chapter 4, Lucifer notes that evil has existed in the town for "as long as there's been power"[5], to which Spender responds that it's "not like thirteen years ago" in that they're coordinated and have a leader.

Several other mysteries surround the town of Mayview: its abnormally high number of spirits and ghosts, the existence of monsters within the barrier[6][7] , and the strange disappearance of the Doctors Burger. Additionally Mayview has no fixed location in relation to the rest of the world. Davy Jones describes it as "Exactly where you think it is. Exactly where we all think it belongs! Around the bend, right off the road, precisely where you left it!"

Barrier[]

Main article: Mayview Barrier

Surrounding the town is an invisible barrier, which was placed by Texas Walker[8] to prevent any spirits or spectrals from crossing in and out of the town's border. However, it allows ghosts and non-spectrals to enter and leave the town without hindrance.

The only spirit known to be able to pass through the barrier is the Ghost Train, and is regularly used to transport Consortium agents in and out of Mayview. While the Train is incapacitated or stuck inside a tool, it is impossible for spectrals to enter or leave the town. The Doorman's power also has the ability to let others bypass the barrier, if given the proper keys.

The Great Unknown[]

Mayview's lake is the resting place of The Great Unknown, the last of the Great Wights, a being of immense and incomprehensible power. The power of this Wight is known to warp reality in and around the town based on the desires of the town's inhabitants, giving the location itself several strange properties. Most significantly, the town's ability to be located wherever the residents and visitors think it should be. The town's nature as a bubble of unreality also allows it to be warped into different forms with different names, changes that apply to memories retroactively. This is implied to have already happened to an older version of the town referred to as "Clayview", and happens again at the climax of Chapter 8, transforming it into the seaside town of Bayview.
