Maxwell "Max" Puckett[11] is the main protagonist of Paranatural, an up-and-coming spectral, and a member of the Activity Club.
Appearance[]
Max has short, brown hair and dotted black pupils. He can often be seen wearing an indigo baseball cap, a matching backpack holding his baseball bat, and laced red-and-white sneakers.
In Chapter 1, Max wears a plain black t-shirt and blue jeans. While heading to bed, Max wears a black wristband; the next day, he wears a beige puffer vest. In Chapter 2, he wears a white t-shirt with green sleeves and grey sweatpants. During Chapter 3, he wears a black "Insolent Children"-branded zip hoodie over a light grey t-shirt and dark grey cargo shorts.
At the start of Chapter 4, he wears a striped grey zip hoodie light blue t-shirt and black pants; the next day, he wears a grey shirt under a black puffer puffer vest, grey pants, and black sneakers. That night, he wears a plain black hoodie over a grey t-shirt and blue jeans.
At the start of Chapter 5, Max wears a grey t-shirt and heart-themed boxers with pockets. At school, he wears a black short-sleeved button-up shirt with red accents and blue jeans. During gym class, he wears a black "Insolent Children"-themed shirt (which later says "h ole" after Max takes a hit from a dodgeball), black gym shorts, and red-and-blue wristbands on his right and left wrists, respectively.
Personality[]
Max can initially seem to be somewhat cynical and pessimistic, often making snarky and sarcastic comments half the time while dealing with residents of Mayview. This has become somewhat of a habit of his, to the point where he apologizes after making an dry quip about PJ's cowardice without thinking.[12] Though Max is usually a straight man to Mayview's eccentricity, he's not above annoying people for the sake of it or making puns, qualities he shows in full force when he's hanging with Isaac O'Connor. He also appears to deal with uncomfortable situations by either deflecting with sarcasm and dry humor[13] or avoiding them entirely if he can,[14][15] though he eventually attempts to overcome the latter by the end of Chapter 5.
Despite this, Max is shown to care about his family and friends, dealing with a group of shoplifters himself so that his father's optimistic view of Mayview isn't ruined[16] and attempting to give PJ a pep talk to boost his self-confidence. He has trouble with finding the right words to comfort others, however, displayed during his pep talk with PJ[17] and attempt at consoling Isabel Guerra.[18] He is fairly observant of others' emotions, as seen when he notices discomfort from Isaac and Isabel on separate instances and immediately moves to take over for him[19] and defuse the tension,[20] respectively. He enjoys partaking in casual banter with others, such as Isabel Guerra, one of the few to quip back.[21][22][23]
Background[]
Max used to live with his family (consisting of his mother, his father, and his younger sister, Zoey Puckett) in the big city[24] of Baxborough, where his friends included Sam, Doghouse, and Damien. When he was younger, Max used to watch a stunt television show called Shred Eagle Extreme on public-access television with his friends and tried to replicate the show's tricks in "much more dangerous places",[25] leading to him becoming skilled in parkour.
Five years prior to the start of the comic, Max's mother died under unknown circumstances in a way that could be described as the "sudden, grisly sort".[26] At the start of the comic, Mr. Puckett decided to move with his children to a convenience store in his childhood town of Mayview.
Paranatural[]
Chapter 1[]
Max Puckett moves to Mayview with his family to discover his new home sits above a corner store. Though he notices strange noises in his room late at night, he does not actually see any spirits until his altercation with Johnny and his gang the next morning. A lengthy chase occurs after he lands on Johnny's face with his scooter and he is greeted by Susan from the Journalism Club, who shows him around the school while trying to get him to join her. After meeting his new classmates and teachers, he is asked by his history teacher Mr. Spender to meet him after school. Later he notices Isabel chasing a bat spirit he can see, and follows her. Though Isabel is excited that he could see the spirit too, she locks in a storage closet for his safety. He's drawn to a bat that turns out to be a tool, which he uses to take out the rampaging spirit before he collapses out of hunger. Max is introduced to the world of ghosts, spirits, spectrals and tools by Mr. Spender. He initially declines to join the activity club, wanting to have more time to think about it.
Chapter 2[]
Later at night, he meets the ghosts inhabiting his bedroom, a boy named PJ and his companion poltergeist Lefty, a disembodied hand. After this, his home is briefly attacked by Gorf. Before he confronts the spirit, he calls Isabel for back up before joining Lefty in fighting. During their fight, Max has a brief encounter with his spirit in a trance, and is almost defeated by the frog before a timely arrival by Ed, who defeats it.
Chapter 3[]
The next morning, Max and Isaac embark towards Isaac's "secret shortcut," with the intent to blackmail Mr. Spender for answers about the club. They run into Johnny and Ollie, the Sphinx of Games, and Suzy, and eventually make their way to Isaac's contact, the Doorman. After a brief confrontation between Doorman and a spirit speaking through Max, he allows them to teleport inside the clubroom. Inside, Isaac and Max overhear a conversation between Mr. Spender and his boss about a Cousinhood in Mayview before Max gives their presence away. Mr. Spender inquires about Max joining the club again while explaining to him more about his tool and the trance-state he entered. After Spender presses further, Max relents and joins the club.
Chapter 4[]
That evening, PJ informs Max during his family Monopoly game that three teenagers are shoplifting from the store downstairs. Max heads downstairs and mock-calls the police, making fun of the trio, and they decide to leave. In Max's room, PJ praises his friend for his bravery and Max reveals that he took care of the issue so that his father's idealistic view of his hometown wasn't shattered so quickly upon returning.
Max arrives at school the next day in time to see Isaac send off the Queen of Kindness; Isabel clarifies that this is routine. Upon reaching the Activity club room, Max and Isabel nearly get hit by Spender's light shurikens and then are blinded when the teacher dissipates them; the two spectral children assist Spender in fighting off the Ravenous Gobbledygook (although they are momentarily seen by Ms. Baxter) before heading off to class. Max marvels in a miniature spectral jungle and gets embarrassed upon realizing he was seen by others acting weird in the hallway. Isabel and Ed take Max to the gym in order to teach him some spectral self-defense techniques, and Max attempts to fire a spec-shot, but the shot droops off of his finger and onto the floor instead. When Isabel's grandfather gets mentioned, she switches the subject and introduces Max to the spirit inside her book, Eightfold. Ed elaborates on the mission Spender had discussed earlier; the Activity Club is taking the Ghost Train to escort someone into Mayview. Max is then harassed by Johnny's Gang (sans Stephen) and Mr. Garcia before getting debriefed on the mission by Mr. Spender and heading home.
While Max is preparing for the mission at home, PJ floats in and laments how he isn't hero material since he died before Max's superhero story started. Max cheers him up and notes that he could probably also use a tool since he has spectral energy, promising the excited ghost that he'd ask his teacher about it. He is then picked up by Mr. Spender and driven to Isabel Guerra's Dojo, where he informs Isaac that Johnny saw him use his lightning powers the previous day. As the two resolve to handle it on their own, Isabel and Ed join them in the car, and they're taken to the Ghost Train and paired up. Max gets teamed up with Isabel, and learns from Spender that not only is there a barrier around town that prevents him from leaving town without the aid of the Ghost Train, but that ghosts cannot effectively wield tools as the spirit would devour their entire being for energy. The teacher then jumps out of the train to pursue an escaping Vile Spirit. While Max and Isabel are alone, Isabel tells him that some ghosts can be exceptions to what Mr. Spender said before the Train becomes a Grudge from Forge's interference; the two young spectrals then engage in a grueling battle with the two remaining Vile Spirits, who showcase their power to instantly regenerate from mortal injury.
In the ensuing chaos, Max defends Isabel from a Vile Spirit coming at her from the side and is subsequently kicked off of the train. His attempts to reenter via magnetism fail and he is saved and placed on the top of the train by a mysterious bug spirit. As the train breaches the surface, Max finds himself in a heightened perception state. He timidly greets his serpentine spirit as it stops munching on scrap metal and coats itself in makeshift scrap armor. The spirit peers at Max, sniffing him, and Max decides to take Isabel's previous advice and be assertive. He calls the serpent Scrapdragon, and starts to say something when his bat whacks the tip of the spirit's nose, causing it to panic and repel metal away from itself. Max is flung off of the train due to this, but mysteriously loses acceleration and passes out before he hits the ground, with his body softly floating up in an arc before landing on a set of train tracks.
While unconscious, Max has a dream of leaving his mom to go practice tricks with his Baxborough friends, and meets up with Boss Leader. Max learns from Boss Leader that Scrapdragon is a Grudge, a powered-up form spirits take out of fear and rage, but declines her offer to destroy it, saying that he could throw the bat if he's in danger, or that the spirit could be grateful for his actions and not murder him. Max also declines to be Boss Leader's spy, but when he notices Boss Leader's worry about their meeting endangering him, he lies about how he lost consciousness to reassure her.
He regains consciousness to find himself magnetically stuck to the train tracks below him. The Ghost Train then slams onto the ground, heading right towards him, as Max tries in vain to free himself in time. Max is saved by the agent the Club had been sent to escort, with her Love Arrow making the Ghost Train fall in love with him. After witnessing Spender's shadow spirit's escape attempt and making a gaffe on who Agent Day is (calling her an "agent", instead of "friend" like Isaac was briefed on), Max and the rest of the party board the Ghost Train back into Mayview.
After the incident in which Agent Savage destroys the train in a panic, causing it to tool up in a lantern, Max and the others are taken home. In Max's room, PJ and Lefty enter excitedly asking Max how his mission went and if he had a tool for him, but leaves after seeing Max lying on his side, assuming he's asleep. Max is left alone on the bed, worry etched on his face.
Chapter 5[]
A tired Max is greeted by his father downstairs with news: Max's dad is able to take him to Baxborough over the weekend to see his friends. Due to the Ghost Train being unavailable, Max has to decline his father's invitation with a weak excuse and heads back upstairs to prepare for school.
As Max heads back downstairs with PJ excitedly asking about a possible tool, he encounters Isabel Guerra buying a toothbrush. He tries to console her on the loss of Eightfold and thanks her on having his back during the Ghost Train mission; PJ, hiding in the ceiling, overhears Isabel's response. The two spectrals head to school, discussing Spender's secrecy and Isabel's issues with Isaac, and Max notes that he feels like he's being followed.
Max says hello to Jeff and high-fives him, inadvertently making him a target for Johnny's gang. Later in the day, Max gets picked to be on the Shockodiles during the Hitball game. He deflects Isabel's question and gets blackmailed by Suzy, who has evidence of his bus-jumping antics. Max's stint on the Shockodiles comes to a halt when Johnny hits him with the Golden Switch, forcing him to switch teams, and as he makes the walk over he hears someone tell him to duck. He narrowly avoids being hit by Jeff's ball, which makes a hole in the concrete bleachers behind him.
Max teams up with Dimitri and Johnny to knock Jeff out of the game, but the three are quickly roped into the Student Counsel's plan. When said plan is revealed to be "tie Jeff up and throw a ball at him", Dimitri abandons it and recruits Max and Johnny into his plan instead. After Jeff knocks out the newly-Switched Cody and rails against Johnny's gang for their tactics, Max gives the bully a backhanded compliment for caring about his friends, and Johnny reciprocates; the two then engage Jeff in a standoff, which ends in Max blocking a high-speed Switch ball to let Johnny catch it, breaking his arm in the process. As the game ends with Jeff being pelted by the Burnhounds, a Doctopus is quickly administered to Max's arm, he has a talk with Johnny, he gets a wire from Suzy and a mysterious note, and he's taken to the nurse. Along the way, Hijack tries to justify his actions, but Max shoots him down.
The young spectral quickly catches up to the rest of the Activity Club and joins them in barging into the Teacher's Lounge. After being sidelined from the mission by Mr. Spender, Max heads to the School Store to find the mysterious note writer. He's teased by Ollie before being allowed entry, and Lisa greets him. She gives him a rundown on how the School Store works, and then ropes him into working for her by destroying his wire and blackmailing Suzy. Max then talks to Collin and Cody, gaining information on the corrupt Student Council, before finally facing the mysterious note owner: Alex, a girl who shares multiple classes with him. She has correct information on Max's bus-jumping incident and incorrect information on what the Activity Club does, and Max ultimately gives her a few words of encouragement before leaving.
In the hallway, Max is accosted by Serge, who commends him on his Hitball tactics and pressures him to join the Student Council. Max declines, but Serge's words help him realize that he needs to help his friends take down Hijack, and after briefly bumping into Dave Jones, he leaves both him and Serge behind.
Max grabs his bat out of his locker, dubbing the Doctopus on his arm Painkiller (or PK) as the Ravenous Gobbledygook watches from above. The Gobbledygook tries to attack Max, but he's shoved out of the way in time by PJ, who is revealed to have been following Max around all day and is responsible for various occurrences. When Max's attempt at a spec-shot fails, PJ rams the bat spirit head-on in order to immobilize it, but the spirit flies out of range after Max regains his bat. Max is able to use a spec-shot as a baseball to hit the bat spirit, however, and it flees. After a short discussion with PJ, Max gets a text from Isaac with the identity of Hijack's target, which he relays to Isabel and Ed after encountering them.
Max's battle participation against a Hijacked Spender is minimal, as Hijack ties him up with spectral energy and Max magnets himself into a water fountain shortly after. His repelling off of the fountain, however, helped Isaac trip the possessed club advisor. As the battle concludes, Max notices Isabel's discomfort at Spender not noticing her loss of Eightfold the night prior, and loudly states that he's late for class to give her an out.
Isabel sits next to Max during History class, where she tells him that especially stubborn ghosts or ghosts with exceptional reasons can stay longer than normal ghosts. Max expresses his doubts that he'll be able to find her, and Isabel promises him that she'll help him find his mom if that's what he's intent on doing.
Max gifts PJ the plunger from the Gorf fight, and indirectly asks PJ if he wants to be part of the team, but the conversation is interrupted by Lefty arriving and taking the ghost home. After briefly talking to Isaac in the hallway and encountering Spender outside, Max sets off for home with the rest of the Activity Club.
Chapter 6[]
Max, along with the rest of the Activity Club, is intercepted by the Sphinx of Games and a kitten-like spirit, much to the exasperation of himself and Isaac. After taunting the Sphinx again, Max assists Isabel and Ed in thwarting its lunge by hitting it with his bat[27]. Together with the rest of the club, he hears the Sphinx of Truth's dire prophecy: that "by summer's end, [Mayview] will be destwoyed (sic)!!".
Chapter 8[]
Chapter 8 begins as Max's checkup at Mayview General comes to a conclusion, having received the personal attention of the owner, Dave Jones, himself. Max is extremely uncomfortable with Dave's treatment, dismissive attitude towards his son Cody Jones, and barely-concealed allusions to vampirism, and the narration notes that Max would someday have the opportunity "hit him with a baseball bat"[28].
Abilities[]
General[]
Before moving to Mayview, Max had a history of practicing parkour with his friends back in Baxborough, and is shown to be very agile on feet and on his scooter. These talents alone allow him to avoid the likes of Johnny's gang when given the right environment - though he loses the one-on-one fight - and is shown to be very adaptable with his surroundings, such as when he used water to slide over and attack Gorf.
Spectral[]
As a spectral, Max can physically interact with other spectral creatures, as well as manipulate his spectral energy as a weapon, though he has absolutely no skill in it as his attempts to fire off a "spec-shot" made of his energy fall flat.
Tools[]
Max's tool is an aluminum bat that grants him the power of magnetism which affects most metal objects, including non-ferrous metals. With this power, he can either attract smaller metals to the bat - ranging from quarters, water fountains, and soup cans to the broken pieces of his scooter - or use it to rocket himself towards a large metal structure. Max claims that he can "aim" it so that only the objects he wants to attract will do so.
Relationships[]
Family[]
- Peter Puckett - Max is often the victim of his father's childish shenanigans and gets comically frustrated with him a lot. The two seem to have a decent relationship, however, seeing as how they play board games together, talk frequently, and are often concerned for each other's wellbeing.
- Zoey Puckett - Max and his nine year old sister seem to have a typical sibling relationship. Max tends to tease her, but she gives as good as she takes (for example seen where Max states he "doesn't have time to make fun of [Zoey's] shirt", resulting in her kicking a backpack in his direction which makes him fall down the stairs).
- June Puckett - Max appears to still be mourning his deceased mother and intends to utilize his new spectral abilities to try to locate her, asking PJ how long a ghost can stick around for and questioning Mr. Spender about where a ghost would be produced. He also shares some of her values such as the aversion to making promises. In a flashback in Chapter 4, a young Max is shown cheerfully asking his mother to go to a Hole Pit with him, which she turns down because she's busy, but happily bids him a good time. However, it is unclear how much he knows of her past as "Agent Summers", given his ignorance of Valerie Day's past as Summers' student in the Consortium and of his mother's Spectral status [29].
Friends[]
- Isaac O'Connor - Max is reluctant to call Isaac his friend, yet they seem to be more friendly towards each other than most other characters. Isaac seems to think Max is his gateway to getting answers out of Mr. Spender and therefore formed an alliance with him (stating that Isaac could ask Mr. Spender questions through Max, and in return Isaac could answer Max's questions without Mr. Spender's vagueness), but that hope gets vanquished. As Max is introduced more to the secrets of the Activity Consortium, Isaac becomes more and more irritated and angry with Max, stating that since he told Max many of his secrets, Max should tell him secrets in return, challenging his friendship. Max then is angered at that comment, telling Isaac that "that's not how being my friend or anyone's friend works"[30]. Max is later seen to have cooled down from the outburst, whilst Isaac has not. However, Isaac has recently begun to understand Max's idea of friendship more, being more willing to accept that he can't know everything Max knows as of now.
- Isabel Guerra - She was the first Activity Club member Max came in contact with, although it was a rocky start. Max called her when he thought he was in danger, and she responded (albeit skeptically) by bringing Ed with her to fight the spirit. During the excursion on the Ghost Train, she tries to cheer him up when she sees Spender's explanation on ghosts wielding tools put him down. Later they both vowed to watch each other's back while fighting against the Pixelhounds.
- Johnny Jhonny - Johnny pursued Max for much of his first day in Mayview, demanding fifty cents in return for Max landing on his face. While he is later shown acting relatively friendly towards Max, he is just as liable to beat him up for no reason. After the hitball game, Johnny does admit he feels bad Max broke his arm, but isn't too eager to inform him that.
- PJ - Max's relationship with the ghost is amicable with a few bumps here and there. The two met when PJ scared the daylights out of Max with a smile that registered as a 8.3 on the International Scale of Creepy, and while Max was initially annoyed by PJ's insensitivity towards his mother's gruesome death and PJ was saddened by Max's of powers at the time, the two made up after defeating the spirit threatening them in the Corner Store. Max also reassures PJ when the latter is feeling bummed about not being a hero with superpowers (due to being dead) in Chapter 4, noting that PJ's abilities of flight, intangibility and near-invisibility to people practically make him 3 superheroes at once and that death tends to make heroes even better at their abilities these days. PJ returns the favor in Chapter 5 after overhearing Isabel Guerra mention that friends have each others' backs, warning Max about the ball a Hijacked Jeff was about to throw so that Max barely misses its impact, giving Max a Doctopus when his arm gets broken, pushing Max out of the way of an attacking Ravenous Gobbledygook, and assisting in fighting a Hijacked Mr. Spender. At the end of the school day, Max gives PJ a tool like he promised (although he doesn't give him one that could eat him) and tells him he could be a part of the Activity Club too if he wanted. Max describes PJ by saying that he just wants to give him a big spiral lollipop.[31]
Spirits[]
- Scrapdragon - Scrapdragon is the spirit inhabiting Max's bat, giving him his magnet powers. They don't have much of a relationship, with Max frightening it into a tizzy during their first prolonged meeting. However he does not take up BL's offer to kill it, saying he can possibly reason with it later.
Other[]
- Suzy - Max is tormented by Suzy who insists that he should join her Journalism club and help her gain some information on the Activity club. He often bears the brunt of her insanity despite his attempts to get away from her.

Trivia[]
- On Chapter 1, Page 27, Suzy states that Max is 4'8". In a tweet, Zack Morrison confirmed that this is not indicative of his actual height, and was the result of Zack googling something along the lines of "normal child height".
- According to another tweet, Max's baseball hat and bat are remnants of Paranatural's early stages as a baseball-focused story.
- Max's interaction with Doorman during Chapter 3 implies that he may unknowingly be a medium.
- The conversation between Penny Spender and Phantomime further proves this.[36]
- While Zack has not stated that this is intentional, Maxwells are a unit of magnetic flux.
- Max and R.J. both went to the same Insolent Children concert prior to the comic, though they did not interact.[37]
- According to Zack, if Max were to be possessed by Scrapdragon as a medium, he would eventually take on the following attributes: "Sharp teeth, snake nostrils, probably like red and blue eyes… it'd probably affect his posture and the curviness of his limbs. If he kept it past the point where it had recovered, he’d probably end up with its skin color and the face closing stuff."[38]
- Max isn't very good with faces.[39] His exchange with Ed on Chapter 1, Page 51, and then with Isaac on Chapter 3, Page 3 further prove this, since Max doesn't remember their names.

Notes[]
- ↑ According to Cody on Chapter 5, Page 26, there are two periods before gym class. This would make gym class third period. However, it is followed by lunch. This would seem to indicate that this day has three morning periods.
- ↑ Chapter 5, Page 176 Somewhere from Day 2 (Wednesday) to the morning of Day 4 (Friday). However, Max's outfit from these scenes is seen in the evening of Day 2 (the beginning of chapter 4), but no other school scenes.
