Paranatural Wiki

Mrs. June[2] Puckett[3], neé Summers, is the deceased wife of Mr. Puckett and mother to Max and Zoey Puckett. She was a member of the Paranatural Activity Consortium, and the mentor of Richard Spender and Valerie Day.

Appearance[]

June Puckett has auburn hair, and brandishes multiple tattoos and three ear piercings in each ear. During Max's flashback, Mrs. Puckett wears a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and purple-and-white sneakers, as well as dark blue gloves.

Personality[]

Max's mom has an erratic, humorous, and carefree personality. She is a smoker. She is skilled in welding and appears to be some form of sculpture artist.

Background[]

June Summers and her spirit partner Forge arrived to Mayview by chance 13 years prior to the beginning of the story, deciding to stay for a "pit stop" in their aimless journey.[4] There, she formed a "strange alliance" with the Consortium and with Shrike, in order to solve together the mysteries of the town, also mentoring Richard Spender for a while.[5] At some point, she helped Mina Zarei defeat The Fear Witch and Devilora DuNacht, burning down an entire annex of Mayview Middle School in the process; it was during that mission that she met her future husband, Peter Puckett, who worked there as a janitor, and they began to see each other.[6]

Not long after, she left Mayview for Baxborough with her husband, retiring from the Consortium and starting a family. In the city, she met young Valerie Day, and tutored her in her first steps in the spectral world.[7]

June died in an accidental fire[8] while she was trying to rescue a family friend[9] five years prior to the Puckett family's move from Baxborough to Mayview. According to Max, her death was of the "sudden, grisly sort"[10].

Paranatural[]

Chapter 1[]

While settling into their new home at the Corner Store, Mr. Puckett places a photograph of Mrs. Puckett with Max and Zoey on a nightstand in the living room before declaring, “Now the whole family’s here”.[11]

Chapter 2[]

After PJ informs Max that ghosts like him fade away after a certain period of time, Max asks whether that period is shorter or longer than five years, wanting to speak to his mother again. PJ asks him whether his mother had a “sudden, grisly sort of death”[12]. that would cause her spirit to remain longer, and Max confirms.

Chapter 3[]

Before leaving the Activity Clubroom at the end of the chapter, Max asks Mr. Spender whether a ghost would be most likely to be found "where it died or where she was buried"[13], to which Spender responds that the place of death would be one's best bet.

Chapter 4[]

After being knocked out upon falling out of the Ghost Train, Max has a dream where he asks his mother for permission to go skating at the Hole Pit with Damien, Sam, and their sister Valerie Day; the latter offers to babysit for the kids.[14][15] After paying the babysitter, Mrs. Puckett begins to return to her work before Boss Leader interrupts Max's dream.

Chapter 5[]

While in Mr. Spender's class together after defeating Hijack, Isabel corrects what she had told him about ghosts the previous night in order to not give him false hope, saying that the ghost that stick around either have exceptionally unfinished business or are "exceptionally stubborn jerks"[16]. Max tells her that his mom was "normal", but that he still wants to believe she's out there against all odds.

Chapter 7[]

In a flashback that takes place 10 years before the beginning of the story, Doctor Gwen Burger has the chance to meet again Rick Spender, Mina Zarei and Texas Walker inside the Dream Hub; she exhorts Rick and Mina to stay away from the darkness roiling in Clayview and to the adults handle the danger. In doing so, she mentions the name "Agent Summers", which elicits a reaction from both Spender and the Great Unknown dreaming right next to her.[17]

In another flashback, this time at the camping trip that Spender, Zarei, Garcia and Isabel Guerra went on 6 years in the past, the three adults begin to reminisce about the adventures of their youth, mentioning again Agent Summers, and the fire-based spectral powers she wielded in the battles she fought alongside the trio, Shrike, Agent Walker and the doctors Burger.[18] Spender objects to that memory, suggesting that even back then, the group was undermined by internal conflicts, and Zarei cuts short the conversation altogether.

Later in that flashback, Spender broods over his memories of Agent Summers, and of his feelings of betrayal over her departure.[19]

During one of Mr. Spender's flashbacks, a young Agent Day watches the teacher zip off to fight King Catnine. Although initially disappointed with her inexperience, she vowed to return to Mayview when she was ready in order to fulfill June's last request.[20]

At the final page of the chapter, Agent Day and Mr. Spender have an intense conversation about their shared mentor, Agent Summers. In its aftermath, Agent Day off-handedly mentions that Agent Summers' full name was "June Puckett", causing Mr. Spender to choke on his beef wine in disbelief.[21]

Other[]

  • Richard Spender - Ever since June's arrival in Mayview, Spender idolized her and looked up to her as his mentor; Zarei describes him as having been "Agent Summers's starstruck shadow" at the time.[22] With her, he lived many an adventure fighting off hostile spirits[23], where he would eagerly rush into the fray to earn her praise.[24] Spender lets on that her departure was preceded by a painful rift in their relationship[21], and that June let him down by breaking the unfullfilled promises she made to him, in addition to her being the last of a long string of mentors who left him behind.[25] In spite of Spender's conviction that June had quickly forgotten him and replaced him in her life for the better[26], however, June always held onto her memories in Mayview, and she relayed them all to Valerie Day with fondness, as those were "her favorite tales to tell".[21] Nonetheless, Spender's memories of June Summers are tainted with bitterness and resentment, and he prefers to avoid thinking about the subject.[27] When he lets himself compare his own experience as an educator with hers, he fears his own shortcomings to be exactly the same as June's, and draws parallels to the inadequacy he feels towards his students and Summers's past failure to live up to his expectations[21], instead proving herself to be "a fickle savior".[28]
  • Valerie Day - June Puckett was Valerie Day's first mentor back when they were living in Baxborough, although she didn't do so out of obligation toward the Consortium, having retired after her departure from Mayview: rather, she offered help to the young spectral out of the goodness of her heart. Valerie was always grateful to her for that, and she looked up to her as she tried to "live like she did every day".[21] Valerie also used to babysat Max when he go out with her little siblings to play, and June insisted on paying her despite her protests.[29] June relished in retelling the tales of her time in Mayview, and Valerie loved those stories as she grew up, being inspired to return to Mayview, once she had become a full-fledged agent of the Consortium, to investigate the "laundry list of unsolved mysteries"[30] that June passed on to her and to fulfill "June Puckett's last request".[20]

Mr. Spender referenced her being a "pyrokinetic spectral".[31]

Quotes[]

Mrs. Puckett: "Have you seen this piece, though?! It's like, the best thing I've ever made!!"
Mrs. Puckett: "Second to you."
Mrs. Puckett: "And third to that thing over there with the spikes, 'cause hot damn"
— Mrs. Puckett to Max Puckett (Chapter 4, Page 111)
"Right, um, so. I don't think... a responsible parent... would let a 7-year-old near a "Hole Pit"... unsupervised. And, uh, Neither would I."
— Mrs. Puckett to Max Puckett (Chapter 4, Page 111)

Trivia[]

  • While taking off her glove to pay Max's babysitter, Mrs. Puckett can be seen having what appears to be rough spikes on the back of her right hand.
  • During his conversation with Boss Leader in Chapter 4, Max reveals what his mother's philosophy on promises was:
Nothing good ever comes of 'em. Only ever bad stuff. Promises don't mean you'll do a thing. They just mean you'll hurt whoever you made 'em with more when you don't.
