— Mr. Garcia to Mr. Spender (Chapter 5, Page 300Pnat)

Jean[1] Garcia, or Mr. Garcia is a science teacher at Mayview Middle School. In Chapter 5 of Paranatural, he is revealed to be in a casual relationship with Richard Spender.[2]

Appearance[]

Mr. Garcia has brown, slicked-back hair with a loose strand hanging over his face, as well as noticeable stubble.

In Chapter 1 and Chapter 3, he wears a white dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves, a black belt, and beige slacks. In Chapter 4, he wears a black dress shirt with chest pockets over his previous pants and belt. In Chapter 5, he wears a light purple[3] vest over a white dress shirt, blue jeans, and brown shoes[4]. In Chapter 7, his attire in the present is mostly the same, with an added light gray jacket; a younger Garcia seen in Spender's flashback concerning Isabel wears a yellow shirt with an image of a campground on it. The younger Garcia's hair strand falling in front of his face is wavier.

Personality[]

Mr. Garcia is shown to be exhausted most of the time[5][6], causing him to be easily irritated out of his normally apathetic and informal disposition. In Chapter 4, Mr. Garcia is shown attempting to follow along with an episode of Bob Ross's The Joy of Painting in his spare time. In Chapter 5, he is revealed to become flustered at the mention of his relationship with Mr. Spender.[2][7]

Chapter 7 reveals, through narrative details, that Garcia is a werewolf. Observations from Spender detail that in his werewolf state, Garcia has poor self control and restraint (a trait most werewolves seem to share), describing his behavior as "feral".

Background[]

According to Jeff, Mr. Garcia has a history of telling bad jokes.[8] While taking Max Puckett around the school, Suzy mentions that Mr. Garcia was involved in an incident involving an "entire pizza"[9]. On Zack Morrison's Tumblr account, it was revealed that he threw the pizza out of a window.[10]

Garcia has links to the Cousinhood of Man, being involved until at least his high school days, and is implied to hunt monsters. Chapter 7 reveals that he became a werewolf before adulthood.

Paranatural[]

Chapter 1[]

On his first day at Mayview Middle School, Max attends Mr. Garcia's first period science class. After being woken up on his desk by Max, Mr. Garcia proceeds to introduce Max to the class before going into his lesson. At the end of the class, Mr. Garcia hands out textbooks to his students while telling Jeff Flavors to get a haircut.

Chapter 3[]

While chasing Johnny Jhonny through the woods, Max Puckett spots a fully-dressed Mr. Garcia floating down a river.[11]

Chapter 4[]

After shooing Johnny and his gang away, Mr. Garcia tries to bribe Max into not telling anyone about his escapade in the river with a Starchman Star.[12] Later on, he is seen in a photograph on Suzy's computer screen, depicting him being caught painting along with a Bob Ross video.[13]

Chapter 5[]

After gym class is over, Mr. Garcia is listed as one of the potential suspects who Hijack could have taken over in order to get into the teacher's lounge.[14] He is pursued by Isaac O'Connor, who trails him through the back of the school into the woods before being ambushed by him.[15] Mr. Garcia counters Isaac's nature powers with both strength[16] and his box of juice[17], ultimately catching him in one of his previously placed rope traps.[18] There, Mr. Garcia reveals to Isaac that he has a casual relationship with Mr. Spender and knows he's been acting strangely, leading Isaac to come to the conclusion that Mr. Spender was the one under Hijack's control.

After Hijack's defeat, Mr. Garcia eavesdrops on Mr. Spender speaking with Agent Day about having a boyfriend. This catches him off guard, and he drops the toothpick in his mouth. While trying to recover it, he is seen by Mina Zarei.[7] After Mr. Spender talks to the rest of the Activity Club, Mr. Garcia sneaks up on him and offers to walk home so Mr. Spender can drive the kids. Mr. Spender reassures him that they're fine on their own; when Mr. Garcia expresses doubt, Mr. Spender responds, "I'm sure. They're together. They'll be just fine."

Chapter 7[]

Mr. Garcia looks at Mr. Spender's wound back at Spender's house, and advises that he seeks the help of Zarei, calling her a friend[19]. He then turns to leave so Spender can rest, and Spender hands him the crossbow he uses to hunt. As he starts to walk out, Spender grabs his arm. Garcia reassures his boyfriend about the threats of Mayview as well as his own personal demons, and informs him of Zarei's appearance at the school before heading out.

In Spender's flashback concerning Isabel, a younger Garcia chats with the sunglasses spectral on the phone, ribbing him about his family, his past, and his decision to take Isabel on the trip and then leave her in the car while he raids his house for supplies[20]. Garcia proceeds to accompany Spender, Isabel, and Zarei on their camping trip, where they're lured by Paige into fighting a werewolf in the woods.

Relationships[]

Coworkers[]

  • Richard Spender - Mr. Garcia and Mr. Spender are in a romantic relationship. Upon ensnaring Isaac in one of his traps, Garcia tells him the nature of their relationship off-screen, causing Isaac to intensely blush and exclaim "YOU'RE WHAT? HIS WHAT?!" as Garcia asserts that it's "casual" and "a secret".[2] While speaking with her after school, Spender tells Day that he has a boyfriend, causing Garcia to look over in surprise and blush.[7] After school, Garcia offers to walk home to allow Spender to drive the kids to their houses, indicating that they live in the same place.[21] Garcia checks up on Richard after the events of Chapter 5, making him dinner, giving him a kiss and ruffling his hair before heading out. According to Garcia, Spender prevents Garcia from speaking with Isaac and the other club members for reasons unknown.[2] In Chapter 7, it's mentioned that Spender would "steal [the] moonlight" to protect Garcia in his werewolf state.
  • Mina Zarei - The two shared an awkward interaction near the end of the day in Chapter 5, with Garcia awkwardly waving at Zarei. Garcia also calls her a friend of both himself and Spender[1]. In Chapter 7, it's revealed that Zarei, Spender, and Garcia were close friends from childhood into their early adult years. Zarei and Garcia have a generally playful, teasing relationship with each other, but Garcia trusts Zarei to calm him down and give him direction. Narrative details imply that Zarei is keeping secrets to keep Garcia safe.
